Lago di Sorapis with its turquoise water and dramatic backdrop of mountains is one of the most beautiful lakes in the Dolomites (Italian Alps). The trail is very busy but when I visited in September after the school holidays it was not crowded. I found the surrounding area very beautiful and the hike to Lago Sorapis is one of the best day hikes in the Dolomites.
This blog is my own personal experience and has all the information that you should know before visiting Lago Sorapis.

Lago di Sorapis hiking trail begins at Passo Tre Croci about halfway between Cortina d'Ampezzo and Misurina (see the above google map for exact location). Park your car either along the road or near the restaurant at the Passo Tre Croci.
There is also the possibility to take bus runs by the Dolomit Bus company between Cortina and Misurina which stops at the Passo Tre Croci. The actual timings can be found on their website.
The first half of the trail is through the thick pine trees forest. The trail is marked with red and white coloured paint and sometimes number 215 pointing towards Rifugio Vandelli or Lago Sorapis. The trail is can be very busy especially during the school holidays and on weekends.
The first half of the trail is rather unspectacular, flat with little or no elevation gain. The views gets better as the trail leaves the forest behind
The trail has some very sketchy parts and the rocks are very slippery especially when it rains, therefore, it is important to wear proper hiking shoes with a good grip on the rocks.
The exposed and dangerous parts of the trail are secured with rope and ladder. The following pictures will give you an idea about the trail
It takes around 2 hours to reach the lake with a few short breaks along the way. There is also a nice circular hiking path all around the lake and if you plan on doing it then you will need at least one hour more. Even though the trail is very busy almost every day in the summer but surprisingly I found myself all alone at the lake and didn't see anyone, it was maybe due to bad weather and my decision to start the hike in the afternoon when most of the hikers have already gone back.
The milky blue coloured water of Lago di Sorapis is surreal and in my opinion it makes Lago di Sorapis one of the most beautiful lakes in the Alps. I had the lake to myself and sat there for about an hour and you should plan sufficient time to enjoy this stunning lake.
To get back to the start of the trail, you will need almost same amount of time.
Lago di Sorapis is a perfect day hike from Cortina d'Ampezzo and but there is also a possibility to stay overnight at the Rifugio Vandelli which is right next to the lake. The Rifugio is a very popular choice among hikers to stay overnight and is usually fully booked during school holidays and on weekend. Therefore, it is advised to reserve your bed a few days in advance. For reservations and opening hours call them at +39 0435 39015.
